Koules: The Venetian Fortress on Heraclion city port.

Anyone who visits Heraklion, the metropolis of Crete, can easily understand the size of this city, and the reason so many visitors are excited by it. It was called Handakas for the Saracens and Cantia for the Venetians. Nowadays, Heraclion, is made up of the new and old town. The old town is inside the Venetian walls and is still picturesque after all these years. At the south side of the walls lies the tomb of one of the most important writers of Greece, Nikolaos Kazantzakis. This place has a view of the whole city and the Venetian port. Another sights worth seeing are the Koules Fortress at the port entrance, the Basilica of Saint Marcus, a venetian cathedral church built in 1239, which is now use for various exhibitions, conventions and lectures, the saint Titos church, the saint Minas cathedral and finally the central square of Heraclion, Square Eleutherias with the famous fountain of the Three Lions and the Saint George’s gate.

In the south of the city, there is the Knossos Palace, of the reigning state of Crete that ruled over 100 cities in the prehistoric ages. Lotzia is considered as the most elegant Venetian monument that won the EUROPA NOSTRA award in 1987 for the best renewed and well preserved European monument of the year. Daidalos street is ideal for shopping as it is the commercial pedestrian street in the heart of the city. Take a moment to relax having a coffe in Korai street . You can easily find hotels and apartments for rent that are closer or farther to the sighs of the city. Also visit the archeological museum, the History museum of Crete, the Battle museum of Crete and the Natural History museum. Heraklion marketplace is the richest market of Crete.You can find everything, from souvenirs and jewelry to clothes, food and traditional Cretan Products that are essential to Mediterranean diet.

Sightseeing

  • Visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraclion to admire the ancient treasures, found on the Knossos Palace. Amongst others, you can see pieces of the Minoan micro-plastic such as the famous statuettes of the Minoan view of snakes.
  • Learn the Cretan History from the first Christian centuries to the modern times by visiting the Historical Museum of Crete. It is interesting to see the exhibits of the modern history of the island which are divided to four periods a)the Ottoman period which emphasizes on the Muslim presence on the island, b)the revolutionary period before the union with the rest of Greece, c) the mid-war period, d) the World War 2 period. There also rooms dedicated to the famous writer Nikos Kazantzakis, in which the visitor can see his desk and library.
  • Visit the CretaQuarium to see the aquarium which contains species of the Mediterranean sea and to have an audio tour.
  • Visit the Knossos Palace, with its impressive wall paintings and learn about one of the most ancient civilizations from the Neolithic Era(7000 – 3000 b.C.).
  • Visit Koules, a Venetian fortress at the old venetian port which resembles to a piece of fortification architecture of Western Europe.

  • Palaiokastro: A beach with pebbles 10km west of Heraclion.
  • Ammoudara: A sand beach and a tourist resort 5km away from Heraclion.
  • Tobrouk: A tourist beach 9-10km away from Heraclion with a lot oh hotels, taverns and restaurants.
  • Gouves: A sand beach close to the tourist resort Kato Gouves 18km away from Heraclion.
  • Matala: It is locates on the south side of Crete, 68km away from Heraclion. It is known as the “hippy beach” because famous artists camped in the caves behind the beach, artists such as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Cat Stevens.
